It is nearly certain that any attempt to extend Mohsin Naqvi’s term as president of the Asian Cricket Council, which is set to expire on April 2, 2027, will be unsuccessful. It is expected that at least three, and potentially four, of the five ACC Full Members will be opposed to an extension, rendering it nearly impossible for the Executive Board to achieve the requisite near-unanimous agreement.
Mohsin Naqvi, who serves as the Interior Minister of Pakistan and the chairperson of the Pakistan Cricket Board, assumed the role of president of the ACC on April 3, 2025. The Executive Board, which comprises Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, and Sri Lanka, would need to approve any extension.
Tamim Iqbal, the president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board, is reportedly anxious to assume the position after Mohsin Naqvi’s tenure expires, as Bangladesh is the next country in line for the ACC presidential rotation.
What is the reason for the improbability of the Mohsin Naqvi extension?
The Executive Board’s unanimous consent is required for the president’s tenure to be extended under the ACC constitution. That barrier has not been breached in the present political climate of Asian cricket. The ACC president’s two-year term is not associated with the ACC Annual General Meeting and is rotated among the Full Members.
The recent turn of events mentioned includes two prominent prize disputes. Mohsin Naqvi declined to present the Asia Cup trophy to the India men’s team on September 28, 2025, and it remains in the ACC offices in Dubai. The Indian women declined to accept the Women’s Asia Cup trophy from Mohsin Naqvi after their victory over Sri Lanka in 2026. These incidents have resulted in the expansion of the board’s divisions.
The 2024 precedent set by Jay Shah is a prime example of the variation in the current environment. In that year, Shah was unanimously elected to a third term as president by the members of the ACC, with Sri Lanka voluntarily relinquishing its turn. It appears that there is no such demand for a Naqvi extension.
What is the subsequent step in the ACC presidential succession?
The procedural concern is whether Bangladesh will formally assume the presidency after Naqvi’s term expires in April 2027. Tamim is reportedly enthusiastic about the position, and Bangladesh is confirmed as the next in line, as per the rotation system.

India will be the two-time reigning champions of the Asian Under-19 Women’s Championship, which is scheduled to occur in Bangladesh in December 2026. This event is the next confirmed ACC event. The subsequent men’s Asia Cup is scheduled for June 2027 in Bangladesh, provided that the succession proceeds as anticipated and a new ACC president is appointed after Naqvi’s term concludes.
