Shreyas Iyer Shows the Selflessness of a Good Leader, Says Gambhir

Shreyas Iyer led India to a 19-run victory against Pakistan in the men’s cricket gold medal final at the Asian Games 2026 on Saturday, October 3. With the victory, India retained their gold medal in the competition. Shreyas Iyer and his team are now preparing for a five-match Twenty20 International series against the West Indies, which will begin on Tuesday, October 6.

Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy has been appraised by India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, ahead of the upcoming series.

During the 2024 Indian Premier League season, when Shreyas Iyer captained the Kolkata Knight Riders and Gambhir was their coach, they had a close working relationship. KKR won their third IPL title that year thanks to their combined efforts.

Gambhir went into length on the qualities of Iyer’s captaincy style that stood out to him during their time at Kolkata Knight Riders. The head coach understood that few leaders, particularly those who are key hitters for their club, would willingly change their batting order for tactical reasons. This adaptability demonstrated a focus on team performance over individual performance.

According to Gambhir, selflessness is the foundation of effective captaincy, which extends beyond physical abilities and technical proficiency. The head coach believes that what distinguishes good leaders from exceptional ones is a captain’s dedication to putting team goals ahead of personal interests.

Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy will be tested in the T20I series as India looks to continue their winning streak over the Caribbean team after winning two of three games in their most recent ODI series against the West Indies.
