Defending champions Desert Vipers secured Babar Azam at the ILT20 auction on October 2, 2026, for the next season, which begins on November 22. The Pakistani batsman was selected at a base price of USD 80,000, alongside his countrymen Shadab Khan, Fakhar Zaman, and Naseem Shah. The sale took place prior of the tournament’s finals, which are slated for December 20, 2026.

Desert Vipers CEO Phil Oliver detailed the team’s strategy for purchasing Babar Azam during the auction process. The Vipers’ decision-making team consisted of Development Lead Jack Luffman, Head of Operations Sam Charnley, and cricket analyst Freddie Wilde. He described the precise characteristics that made Babar a priority signing for the franchise.

Babar Azam T20 international record demonstrates his worth to the franchise.

The 31-year-old has scored the most runs in men’s T20Is, 4,596 in 136 innings at a strike rate of 128. In the Pakistan Super League, Babar is the highest run-scorer with 4,380 runs in 109 innings. His recent form in 2026 saw him finish as the leading run-scorer with 588 runs in 11 innings, including two centuries, and he was chosen captain of the PSL Team of the Tournament.

Babar Azam recent international status provided background for his availability in franchise cricket. The Pakistani batter had not played in a T20I since the T20 World Cup in early 2026. He was also left out of Pakistan’s T20I squad for the forthcoming bilateral series against Sri Lanka, therefore his arrival to the Desert Vipers is an important addition to the franchise’s preparations for the 2026-27 season.
